Including speech balloons in a document, allows students to tell a story simply by matching balloons to a corresponding picture. It could be a creative story, an historical event or a scene from a book. First, open an
Office document (ie. Word or PowerPoint). Add pictures to the page that correspond with the lesson. Pictures could be scanned in, or added from other sources. You may want to turn the page sideways, using
Landscape orientation, first. This gives more room across the page for the pictures and speech balloons. Before adding the speech balloons, make sure the
Drawing toolbar is showing, by selecting
Toolbars under the
View menu, then click on
Drawing. On the
Drawing toolbar, click
AutoShapes and then
Callouts. Select the type of speech balloon you want; click and drag the crosshair to the side of the first picture on your page. (It can be moved and resized later.) Type the words you want in the balloon. Then you may alter the font, alignment, size or color of the text. Next, you can format the speech balloons by using the
Fill Color,
Line Color or
Line Style buttons on the
Drawing toolbar. Resize the balloon, if needed, by selecting the balloon and clicking and dragging the selection handles (boxes around the outer edges). To change its position, drag the yellow, diamond-shaped button at the end of the speech balloon. (If you don't see the yellow button, click near the end of the balloon.) Continue adding speech balloons to the other pictures.
Save and print your final product.
